Student Projects

Blogging & Mapping

As an instructor of record in the Department of American Studies, Rebekah incorporated research projects including fieldwork and digital humanities components in her classes as a means of engagement and experiential learning. In the summer of 2019, students in Rebekah’s AMS 101: American Identities contributed to a class website American Identities in Public Memorials by conducting original fieldwork on local memorials and writing blog posts exploring topics of identity, memorialization, and public history. In the spring of 2020, Rebekah was funded by an IDRH Course Development Grant to develop a digital humanities component of this class to expand the existing project and adjust for the limitations posed by Covid-19. The mapping project below, which replaced physical visits to memorial sites, was one addition that resulted from this grant.

Zines

Rebekah currently teaches in the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Kansas and continues to incorporate creative, mixed-media projects in the classroom. Students in the Fall of 2022, students in WGSS 333: The Politics of Physical Appearance, put together this zine which explores themes of gender, sexuality, race, and beauty. This project provides an opportunity for students to explore topics that are of particular interest to them while learning about the history of zines and radical publishing outlets.
